Asparaginase is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of asparagine to aspartic acid. It is used for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and is also used in some mast cell tumor protocols ,Unlike other chemotherapy agents, it can be given as an intramuscular, subcutaneous, or intravenous injection without fear of tissue irritation. Before treatment is started a test dose of 1 to 10 KU of L-Asparaginase in 0.1 ml of distilled water should be injected subcutaneously and the injection site observed for several hours of evidence of primary hypersensitivity.
Side Effects: Nausea, stomach upset, skin rash, acute toxicity.
